OK, I got a sudden burst of energy and picked up a couple of photos from drivetrain.com
This is a gasket from a 44 cover:
The best I can tell, it exactly matches Semper's pic. The 70 cover is very similar, but I think there's usually some exposed material below the lip of the cover on a 70.
D70 and D60 can use the exact same cover, regardless of what the shops will tell you. So take that for what it's worth. I am using my D60 cover on my 70 right now.
You're right, the cover is the same part no. I'm just saying that I think that the 70 has some exposed case material below the bottom of the cover, maybe 1/2". But then again, I'm not Alfred Eisenhower either. Hope it helps.
This Truck is made up of a few different trucks.....I need to put in some new gearing and replace a spindle....but I have no idea what type of axles these are. Please check out my pics and let me know what you think they are, Thanks
What is the width of the axle housing covers?
One quick way is to measure the width of the cover.
A 10 3/8" width cover is a Dana 44
A 12 1/8 " width cover is a Dana 50, 60, 70, 80
OK, it has been a while and I am back to work on the truck! I have not been able to find ANY numbers on the outside of the axles, but i have not given up looking! there are many layers of rust and paint to deal with! But I have taken off the front diff cover to get the numbers off of the ring gear. I have not been able to find any of these numbers on the charts that i have. MAybe you can help me out:
4 1 77 DANA 33850 B3C20 45-11 Front (with a large 787 stamped on it)
08 16 00 DANA T 30316 MAI L746 41-9 Rear (plus it has a large 676 stamped on it)
as far as the front end goes it has the axle shafts with 30 splines on the inside and 19 splines on the outside.
Ok, any help would be great! Thanks for all of your help so far guys!!!!
front is a dana 44/216 rear is dana 60/248
Ring Gear & Pinion Kit |Ratio & Tooth |Pinion Number |Ring Gear Number
707240-9X------------4.09 (45 - 11)--33849--------33850
thanks alot beeboy.............you just lifted a huge weight off my shoulders! There is no front driveshaft in it, the guy I bought it from warned me about the different gear ratios! Now I can get back to buying parts. Thanks.
By the way, how are these axles as far as durability? and what should I try to replace these with when I blow these up? HaHa!

they are pretty strong. If you are staying under 35" tires you SHOULD be ok.
Common upgrade is to do a D60 front ($$$$) and a D70 rear.
Unless you are hard core offroading you should be ok with what you have.
Both 8 lug and 5 lug versions exist, only difference is the hubs/rotors.
I should have known you were gonna say that about 35s......because naturally Im running on 38s right now! HaHa. So when Im looking for spindles hubs and rotors what do I ask for? 8 lug Dana 44 parts? I was thinking of doing the extreme rebuild on this front axle......about $600, do you think it would be a better investment to just grab a 60? If so what do I want to look for?
Hmmm...getting past my point of expertise on this one now. The 8 lug parts would be off of an F250.
A used D60 will typically set you back at least a grand, unless you get lucky. Sometimes you can pick up a whole truck thats broke down that has the D60 for less than the axle alone is worth.
The guys in the offroad forum know tons more about building up these axles than I do.
from everything I have found out today and by looking at parts on the net, I have come to the determination that I am running a DANA 44 HD on my truck and that is why I have a DANA 44 with 8 lugs. Once again, thanks for all the help!! Couldnt have figured it out alone.
