I currently have a 79 F-350 4X4 regular cab, which has an overall lackluster body. I've done some work on the cab, but the cab corner still needs replaced. The drivetrain and chassis are excellent, however. 400, 4-spd, Dana 60's.
What I really want is a crew cab, which I can't find. I can buy a crew parts truck, which has a reasonable cab shell, but no rear doors (formerly Ranger XLT). The bed is poor, but the front doors and fenders are ok. It has the complete A/C system. It has the cool Crew Cab emblems, incidentally...but the truck is disassembled, with just the cab shell on the rolling chassis (no drivetrain). It's a 2wd f-250. Price: $300
I want to stretch my F-350 and graft on the crew cab. The missing doors and trim scare me more than anything. Are they out there? I just don't know. I do know that I can't find these parts very easily...but that's also what makes them special.
I used a 79 F-250 supercab 4x4 frame and then cut 4.5 inches out (for a short bed), though, 1 year after I got the frame done I ran across a crew cab shortbed 4x4, 79 model Body shot but frame nice. So I will dissasemble and clean up correct crewframe and then one day when I am real bored I will put the body on it. Course the modified frame is very nice also.
Maybe I will maybe I wont.
Good luck.
the downfall in stretching a frame is that you then have 2 splices instead of 1.
just my 2cents. I've also done a few of the ex-cab shortening projects.
The problem is going to be finding an area where the frame rails are parallel enough to cut and join back together. The rails are not really all that parallel when you start looking at them.
