I have a 1990 E 150 Club Wagon van with a FI 351W and E4OD and single exhaust. I purchased the van from a mechanic friend of mine recently. His shop replaced the right exhaust manifold gasket before I bought it because the old one was leaking a lot they said. Yesterday, getting on the interstate, I gave it WOT and it geared down to 2nd at around 45-50mph. When it did, I could hear exhaust forced through that gasket and it seemed that the exhaust system was constricted. It felt like I lost some power, and I assume that's the reason.
Can I assume that the Catalytic Converter is most likely what's causing the constriction? Perhaps the extra back pressure is what caused the original manifold gasket to fail? The thing is, the converter is working fine because the van just passed our strengent Northern Virginia emissions test with flying colors.
Could it just be that the manifold needs retorqued?
