Hey, my speedo has stopped working accuratly at speeds above 55mph. after 55mph it will jump up and down, probably between +/- 5 to 10 of what i'm actually doing.
I have heard this to be a problem with the VSS(speed sensor) but don't know if it on my differential or trans. Also heard it's the dash and i need to get a new speedo.
I guess untill i figure it out can someone with a 4.0ohc, 3.73 gears, 265/75/15 tires and a 5 speed mazda trans tell me the following:
speed at 2000rpm
and at what Rpm i would be doing 70 or 75?
Thanks so much, kinda hard to make long highway trips like this.
Naw, you're not an idiot; it was just overlooked. No biggie. But the year was needed to steer ya down the right path since they changed from cable driven to electronic via the VSS.
Rangers of this vintage were built with a speedo head that was, um, faulty. The fix is to either replace the head with a revi$ed one from Ford or to have a speedo shop install a new jewel in the one you have. My 94 used to do this when cold in the winter; I just learned to live with it. BTW, if you junkyard one I'd expect to have the same problem; the result will be like gambling.
As I recall, 2400 on the tach was somewhere between 70-75. Same driveline as you're talking about. BTW, it's definately not the VSS in your truck. Ranger speedos were cable driven in 94.
You should inspect the cable for binding and damage, but I'll bet your luck will be like mine was (not a cable problem). The fact that it does it at highway/freeway speeds is the tip off.
The speedo head is behind the clear plastic cover; it's what you're looking at when seated in the vehicle.
