My engine has developed a small oil leak over the last couple of months that is driving me crazy. The top of the engine is dry, HPOP lines, Turbo Pedistal even the valley is dry. The oil appears to be coming from the rear main seal but I am not sure. There is oil on the backside of the oil pan, on the bottom of the starter and also on the opposite side of the engine from the starter. It's not much, just wet and leaves a drop our two every couple of days. I have noticed that on the drivers side just above the tranny dust cover on the engine block there is a small plug, 1/4 square wrench type, there is oil around it? Is this a oil plug or a water jacket plug? If it's oil. it might be the source of my leak, if not then I fear it's the rear main. Anyone have any ideas about this little plug?
Thanks,
Traildust
If you mean above the oil pan to the right of the oil filer, that is the view plug into the crankcase. That plug is not under oil pressure.
BTW mine has 84000 mi, and I have the same leak somewhere unknown. It is bothersome to have it drip on my driveway causing black spots. What I did was get under my truck and stick pieces of paper towel around the crevices by the oil pan where the oil is collecting to absorb the leak. I will have to wait until it leaks more so I can find it.
i think thats the oil galley plug? from what i undersatnd, its the 7.3's other achillies heel besides the CPS unit. i have the same leak on my '95....just gotta get under there and tighten it up....and come up with 100$$ for a new CPS i might need eventually
The plug I am talking about is small with a square head that looks to be about 1/4 inch. It's not the type with the square hole that a 3/8 or 1/2 inch extention would fit into. It's located on the very back of the block just above a tranny mount bolt at about the 9 o'clock (driver's side) on the 6 speed housing. It's way below the oil galley. It's sealed with what appears to be red rtv.
Thanks Again,

hmm. i need to get under and look. i wonder how similar my '95 5 spd is....hmm, on second check myself, i see your drivin a '02. i'm at loss for the SD's...
sounds like the plug your talking about is in the back of the head and its the fuel rail plug. there is a lube oil rail plug back there also. i would wipe it clean and see if the oil comes back. if the motor is off there wont be any pressure against it.
are you sure its oil or is it dirty fuel?
the HPOP plugs have been a pita. they redesigned the plug and orings on it. havent had problems with the new ones at all. but that was a OBS problem.
Well it's not the plug I was referring to. It's either the rear main seal or the back of the oil pan leaking. Funny thing is, that it will leak statically. I can wipe the oil pan dry, let the truck just set, after two days the back of the oil pan will be wet with fresh oil. I pulled the tranny dust cover but all I can see is oil along the lip of the oil pan just below the main seal? If it's anything I hope it's the raer main. If I had to let my local dealer pull the engine, my truck would never be the same. Everything they touch turns to you know what!
