I am being forced by my wife to convert my 1978 Bronco 4-speed to an automatic (she has bed knees and cannot use the clutch in traffic very well, and she must on occasion drive it). I am relatively new to the big bronco scene, and was wondering what all I would need to change to convert from the 4-speed to a c6. Also, is the c6 a good choice? I have the 400ci motor in my bronco. Does anyone make a conversion kit with all included linkages, shifters etc..? Thanks in advance for 1. your help and 2. not making fun of this conversion :-).
the c6 was an option in your rig so finding one with the correct bolt pattern shouldnt be a problem. check the local wrecking yards, if you go this route plan on rebuilding it though just for piece of mind. they are cheap to rebuild as well figure 400-600 for a good build
Thanks for the info. Do you know if the transfer case will bolt directly up to the c6 without modifications? I definately will rebuild the wrecking yard c6. I guess I need to find a 78 or 79 in the wrecking yard, and get the complete transm, ission including shifter and linkage. Thanks again!
yes it will bolt up just fine. anything 79 and older unless you find a c6 that was bolted to a 460 (same bolt pattern) in a newer 90- older rig either f150/250/350
It is fairly bolt up, you will need to shorten the rear drive shaft and lengthen the front. Depending on what transfer case you have you may need to change adapters(or just get a tranny that had the same transfer case). You can reuse your cross member, but will need the auto side mount bushing thing, as I think they are different bolt location on the tranny, Stock the C6 was a column shift. I would just make it a floor shift though. .
Thanks for the information. I thought that somthing like that (driveshaft length and adapter) would be an issue. Do you know, of can you point me to a place that will tell me what transfer case, front and rear ends are in my bronco based on VIN or some other code number. Sorry for the elementary questions, as I have not owned my Bronco very long, or have worked on it much yet.
yep, D44 front and Ford 9" rear. There were only two transfer cases in the 78-79 Bronco. If you have part time 4WD then it is an NP205(new process), if it is full time 4WD it is the NP203. If you only have 4lo, 4high, neutral & 2high then it is part time. Full time with have 4low lock, 4high lock, neutral, 2high & 4high.
I believe the bronco has a shorter adapter than the F series truck had. I n=know there is two different adapters for the 205 case just not sure on what was used where. If you get the longer adapter I think the drive shaft will hit the cross member or it could be the shorter adapter causes the drive shaft to hit the C6 pan. Sorry for the confusing info but you need to check out.
you need the short adapter. The two transfer cases have different bolt patterns from the case to the adapter the 205 is kind of square and the 203 it sort of round.
