1988 b2 4wd 2.9L wont shift into drive or overdrive. fluid level good and appears clean. What might the problem be? if replacement needed, will a 1986 trans fit the 88?

It won't shift into D or OD, meaning it works fine in 1 and 2, but doesn't upshift to 3 and 4, or it won't shift into D or OD meaning that it acts like it's in neutral?
If replacement is needed, an '86 A4LD can be made to work. Your '88 should have two solenoids in the transmission (TCC and 3-4 shift), where the '86 only has one (TCC). '88 was the transition year, so it's conceivable that you have a one solenoid A4LD, which makes the switch easier.
The main question in using an older A4LD is whether or not the used transmission is any good. If I were to choose to buy a used A4LD to replace my A4LD, I would look for an A4LD from a 4.0 engine ('91-'94 Explorers and some Rangers). Not sure about using the A4LD from an Aerostar. They might have a different bell housing bolt pattern. The 4.0 A4LD was built stronger than other A4LD's.
with the broncoll in neutral, shifting into od , step on the gas, and she revs up without engaging same is true for drive . the stick moves into gear, but trans doesnt engage. she does go into 1 and 2 and is driveable there. In regards to your pointing out the possible diff in solenoids, what , if anything would have to be done to modify?
The biggest modification in going from a two solenoid valve body to a one solenoid valve body is that you need to wire in a dummy load for the 3-4 shift solenoid circuit so the computer thinks it still controls the 3-4 shift.
As for the problem, I'm not the best at transmission diagnosis, but I don't know that there are any "easy" fixes for that problem. You've already checked the fluid level. Have you dropped the pan, yet to see if there are any chunks floating around and to be sure that the filter hasn't fallen off?
