Power Loss
I own an 89 Bronco 2 auto 4x4 and recently a new problem has popped up.
I seem to be losing power in the car. What I mean by this is that I no longer accelerate as well as I used to. Now I have to push the pedal down to the floorboard in order to get it to rev up and take off at a high speed. I also lose power going up inclines, there’s really nothing there anymore. Pedal is to the floorboard and I’m going up a hill at about 5 or 10 MPH. Going up moderate inclines on the freeway, the car will start to vibrate some and lose power. If I force the car to rev up during that time, it stops the vibration.

Now, I just had a new transmission put in a year ago. I recently had a new muffler put in as well, thinking that was the problem. But the converters were fine, and the new flowmaster hasn’t helped. I used some fuel injection cleaner last week too, and still nothing. New air filter as well.
<O

So, has anyone every experienced this problem before? If not, any guesses? I’m taking it into the shop next week, and I’d like to have somewhat of an idea before it goes in. <O

Thanks in advance for the help!

1) It seems that one of the best places to start is pulling codes. Just because the CEL hasn't come on, doesn't mean the computer hasn't seen/can't see a problem. Even if you do get all pass codes, that's information to help diagnose the problem. You can pull codes with a jumper wire and a test light. See pulling EEC-IV codes in Ken00's tech info post.
2) Timing hasn't moved has it? Once, my distributor hold down bolt came loose, causing the distributor to rattle around, which caused problems. Pull the SPOUT connector and make sure base timing is 10 BTDC.
3) Fuel pressure where it should be (40 +/- 5 psi)? Fuel in vacuum line to FPR (means FPR is shot).
I took it down to my mechanic, and he couldn't find anything wrong with it. The brakes weren't locking up, the fuel pump and pressure was fine, the converters were clean, all the codes came back normal. He said that if he had to guess, it was the stater in the TC. I had just gotten a new transmission put in a little under a year ago, so thankfully it was still under warranty. Took it in, and the stater was locking up. Problem solved.
I'm not sure if that would be the cause of your problems or not.
On a side note, my power door locks went out a year ago and I have yet to get them replaced. Will I need to buy a special actuator, or will this simple two wire actuator do the trick for me? http://autodax.com/catalog/pdetail.php?prdid=8
Thanks!
