Question How do you do a compression check? Is this right...

I am guessing to do a compression test I would pull out all the glow plugs, (removing the injector lines to do this), disconnect the fuel line to the fuel pump inlet, install the tester and crank the engine.

Do I need to disconnect something from the glow plug controller?
Is it bad for the injector pump to run w/o fuel flow through it?

Afterwards, I assume I will have to reconnect the injector lines and then bleed out as much air as I can and then crack the injector lines to flush out the last bits of air. Does this sound about right?

The truck is a 93' f250 w/a non turbo 7.3.

Don't pull the fuel lines (this is a waste of time) just disconect the electrical connection to the IP (two of them on top of the IP) and pull the glow plugs and run the tester through those holes.

anything past the IP will work its way out and be bleed from that point on tank to the fuel filter is where have to bleed it out. from there you shouldn't have any probelms

thanks

Thanks for that quick reply. I already took off the fuel lines, oops, can you get the glow plugs out without taking some of them loose? I am guessing the red wires will disconnect a fuel solenoid or something on the ip.

I don't have to worry about anything with the glow plug controller? I guess I can leave the ignition off and just jump the starter at the starter solenoid on the fender? With the ignition off, the controller won't want to cycle.

Since you have already learned "Ask First---- Action Later" so not to do unnecessary things.
First you will need the proper Diesel rated comp tester (1000psi), to do the test rotate the engine 5-6 rotations each cylinder. Now your supposed to note which rotation the highest reading was accomplished, but I just do it 5-6 rotations your choice and see what the guage reads. The lowest cylinder is supposed to be 75% of the highest cylinder. Ensure the GP wire ends are not touching any metal or they will short out.
