Question Six Speed whining

I have a 2001 F-250 2WD that whines as I go down the road. It gets higher pitched as I go faster (70mph) and almost can't hear it when I slow down (40mph). Possible transmission/rear end? Has anyone heard this before?

Have you checked the fluids in the tranny and rear end? Start there and change if you think there due. Make sure the fluid in the tranny isn't "burnt". It's only ATF.

What you are hearing is gear whine. Sometimes its hard to track down. First I would drain the rear axle and fill it with a good synthetic gear lube. I use Amzoil. Then drain the tranny. It should have ATF in it, not gear oil. I say that because back in the day I ruined not one, but two five speed trannys in a ranger I had because I filled them with gear oil instead of ATF. They would run for about 20k and then let go. But before they let go, they would howl like a mother. Like you said, you can bearly hear yourself think it's so loud. Heck, maybe just start with the tranny and fill it with Amzoil ATF and see if it helps. But if someone put the wrong fluid in the tranny and it's whinning.....the damage is done and it's only a matter of time, failure is immenent. If it's the rear end, maybe it's just time for some fresh fluid, but the gear whine won't go away unless you re-setup the gears. When gears whine in the rear end, it's either from improper install, or lack of fluid. I know that's probably not what you want to hear but that's my 2 cents.
