You can't beat the accuracy and there no chain to stretch. On the down side it transfer's alot of harmonic's to the valvetrain.

they are way more expensive for one. I looked into it a while ago and the consensus was that a double roller was best, I like Edelbrock's, like 60 bucks. The gear driven were around 250 and up.

oh i know they are alot more expensive but im looking at the "cool" factor i like the whine plus i like the idea of not haveing to replace them. but if the cost outweighs that i dont want to do it

As far as harmonics goes, one of the longest lasting Ford engines the big inline-six has a gear driven camshaft and they do not seem to break.

There are a couple of different noise levels involved. The straight cut spur gear drives are very noisy. The helical cut drives are less noisy but they produce a thrust load on the cam that must be compensated for with some sort of bearing.

My cousin has one in his not-Ford 350. It's a high compression motor converted over to propane and kicks out some insane HP. I don't believe there are any performance pro's or con's, just the reliability factor (no stretch).

As for the 'cool' factor, you'll hear the thing coming from a mile away. It's an unmistakable sound and people will know it's you when they hear it.

Personally, I like 'em, but would probably get sick of the noise after a while.

well i like the gear whine, so the noise wont bother me. i was more looking for someone with experiance with one one these style motors. some kits say they wont fit the 400 some say they will. some say there will be machining required some say they wont. i was looking at the pete jackson gear drive but i want to make sure that will fit my application and wont break anything.

go with the pete jackson...i just installed one on my m motor...its not that hard to install...all you need is a belt sander an some 50 grit belt to grind the axles...mine slipped right in at top dead center...you grind the axle on the idler gear untill you have .015 to .060 clearance from the axles and the block with the timing cover and gasket in position...you do not have to grind the block...just the idler gear axles...for the fuel pump eccentric you will need a washer to let the outer two piece spin freely...

You can get a pro comp gear drive from HD_Maddog on e-bay for about $90.00. They are made in Austalia(spelling?). They do alot of Cleveland racing and building down under and the quality of the parts from down under are top notch. (from what I hear). Just another alternative. Pete jackson have a rep of being quality parts so you can't go wrong there either. I also love the gear whine and I haven't heard any complaints about breacking parts with a gear drive, so I think your safe there. Good luck!
