I was hauled some mulch to the house and was loading it into a cart to spead yesterday. After the third cart load or so I heard a noise and my truck had rolled down a slight incline and whacked a tree. The tailgate was pretty bent up.This morning I checked the linkage to the tranny(auto)and found that when it was in park it was not fully in park.I adjusted it so it was frimly in park and tried to pushed and pulled on it to try and make it come out of gear. All worked fine. Now the gear indicator doen not correspond with the gear it is in.It was off before a bit and I think the PO tried to get it close and made it so park was not fully engaged.I think the indicator is not the correct one and was wondering if anyone has a pic of there column that shoes the indicator so I can compare.I did beat the tailgate straight enough to work and was looking for another one anyway.Guess I'll be remembering the parking brake from now on.

Boy, don't that suck??? Nothing like damaging your truck to really screw up the whole day. Anyway, They only list one indicator for 64-66 on the automatics. C5TZ 7B033-A, fits F-100/250's. F-350's used another one. I don't know if you're going to tear into the column or not, but the housing that the indicator sits on has a plate or gate that bolts on the side towards the dash and those wear or actually break in two. It could be worn to the point of the pointer is not lining up with the "P".
I replaced the housing a couple of moths ago and the shifter indexs nicely.I think the indicator may be off of another ford product. The ditance between park and neutral on the column moves way more than the pace on the indicator.Might be the linkage is not right at the tranny, guess I can check that.Just lookin for a photo to verify if I have the right indicator.
Joe , I just read what happened to yo truck ! more than a bummer let me know what ya need. I know what year's my F-100 use's on a F-250 I don't, let me know . Wife's uncle should be up real soon . I can give him a list of thing's to look for there is a lot of em down there & some of them are still on the road .

Joe: Check what kind of transmission you have, whether it is a C-6 or a COM or the like.
It is most likely that someone put in a C-6 as a replacement, but left the COM shifter detents in place. It is almost right, but not enough to ensure th gears are locked in place.
If you have a C-6, you may find it easier to replace the inside detent from a '70 - 72 column with a C-6.
I'm trying to find a complete replacement column, with no luck.
My 65 hasn't been back on the road since some jerk ran a stop sign and took off the front clip. It is all back together but I just fear putting it back on the road...I think the worse drivers around are here in the central valley of California.
Good luck with the tail gate and I agree set your park brake.
Joe, Sorry to hear the bad news, that issue has been on Fords plate for years. I think your current problem is in your adjusting. I don't know where you started but after having done this a few times, I know it can be changed. Take it to a local tranny shop and have them do it if needed.
I have seen it similar on my auto trucks Ive had before and on my 65 Ranger that I bailed out of car jail....I had a 64...sweet truck and all....that sucker scared me a couple times...popped outta park running into reverse....The 65 I got now hasnt done that but I am guessing it could do same thing....I guess thats why the guys created the gearshift interlock....but as to the gate....Its bad indeed....but as bad as it was, I would prolly guess im could have been worse....Which type of gate you need/looking for...I may be able to find one local here for a song...Let me know...
Banjo as usual you wre dead on.Glad I didn't buy that c-6 from ya.See the other thread. As for parts needed.I have posted on another forum in the wanted section without much luck.I need a rust free hood.a good left front fender,a tailgate blue/white would be cool but its gonna get repainted anyway.A shift indicator in good shape would be cool.I live in Northern Virginia but have a bud with a shop that I cna parts freighted to cause I know UPS cant do the karger stuff.Thanx again for the help.
