I'm not a mechanic but I can do simple thinge like changing the oil. Sooo... I figured that I can change the transmission filter on my own. 97 Explorer 4wd. Before proceeding, I thought that the pipe with the catalytic convertor might be in the way. Don't ask me why but I went ahead and dropped the pan anyways. Now of course the pipe/convertor is in the way! It's like there is almost just enough room to get it out (1/2"maybe) but no go. Are there any tricks for this that any one knows of? There are two bolts into a flange at the bottom side of the pipe. I'm just guessing that these coming out will swing the pipe down just that little bit that I need? They are rusted pretty bad. If I have to cut or heat anything off can someone please tell me where or how. I would appreciate all ideas. Glad to be a part of the forum. Thanks.

I don’t know the specifics on the 97 (I have a 94xlt 4X4) but you should be able to unbolt the pipes from the manifold's and drop it that way. If the bolts are rusted you may need to apply heat. I have a oxy/acc setup now but my old cheep map-gas torch got me through many an exhaust system. you just have to get the steel cherry red but don’t burn the steel. Slow even heating is the trick.
Unbolting the cat may be an option but you will more than likely need to replace the gaskets and the hardware and heat may be needed to get those rusted bolts. It goes with out saying have a fire extinguisher on hand when ever you use an open flame. I also I like to keep a spray bottle of water as well. Lastly be wary of oil as it burns really well and once it starts it is a sob to put out.
btw please pardon my typing my 5 week old son is sleeping on me while I type with one hand.
