Steering Box Failure
turning around in the end of a cul-de-sac....with a CAT 304 mini excavator behind my truck bout half way around the turn (have it to the lock) feel a good clunk and feel it in the steeering colum didnt think much of it at first just thought it was a cover in the road. then it was a little harder turnin back strait than normal. my powersteering pump had been makin noise for the last couple months. never got low on fluid. figured it was the typical ford power steering pump the one on my 89 F350 made noise from about a year old till 95 when it got wrecked and never had a problem with it. then after unloading the excavator i had the wheels curbed going down hill and couldnt turn it back strait. after backing up and rolling forward i finally got the wheels strait again but couldnt turn left. seeems like my box had skipped a tooth. could turn all the way one way but then fight to get it just a little past strait turning left. the box didnt feel loose at all either before that...does the F350 use a diffent box? mine is the 2 bolt cover box. just got the D60 in a couple weeks back and wondering if something with that helped kill the box. or ive wondered if something in my powersteering pump broke and dumped it into the box?? cause it dont make noise anymore...and still wont turn left even on jack stands....
any ideas?
You know you've got to pull the box anyway........I'd do a postmortim on it, and see if you can see what failed. I don't know if the pump could have spit something through the high pressure line, but if it did, it should be obvious that what you find isn't part of the box. Let us know what you find.
