There was a period where the Superduty "morphed" from an "early 99" to a "late 99". Over that 2-3 month period, there were some components of each. One easy way to tell if it's an early 99 is by engine build date, but that's a little hard to find. If it's an automatic, you can tell the early 99's by the loud torque convertor.

The early 99's had a torque convertor that rattles very loudly until it locks, then it quiets down. My son-in-law's truck sounds like the tranny is going to fall out until he gets up to 35mph.
That model year is the only one that does it.
I believe that the early 99's also had the powerstroke emblem on the top front of the fender, just like the gassers did, exept it said powerstroke, over the V8 symbol, the 99.5's and later had it on the door like all the other SD diesels do.

Pretty much true. As Ford decided to "morph" from the early 99 to the late 99, they apparently waited until they ran out of the "old" parts before switching to the "new" ones. That's why the morph took three months.
In a thread on another forum, the differences between the two was discussed. A number of people chimed in, stating that they had two or three of the old characteristics, and a few of the new ones. Others also only had part of the update, but many had a different mix than others did.
The turbo is different i beleive. Also i beleive the early 99's had an intake that got air from the fender area instead of drawing area from the front of the truck near the radiator like the 99.5 and up do.
Side note, how are those injectors doing, waiting on an update.
I've had to put the injector swap on hold until I get moved to San Diego. I'm putting all my time into getting that done for now, then will pick up the injector project.
You guys are right about the turbo and intake plenum differences. There are others, too, but I don't profess to be an expert on all of them.
So for with out the VIN# or the build date it's not really precise on what year truck you are looking at.
I just test drove a 99 and the emblem is on the fender, but the turbo was not loud. As for the intake from what I have found on the net is that if the writing on the intake is in white letters it's a 99, and if in black letters it's a 99.5?
As for finding the build date on the door where shouild I look? I could not find any dates or anything on the latch side of any of the doors?
Mine is an early 99. The markings on the air intake are all black. I think wheel spindles, intake from fender and turbo type are differences. Maybe up to 10 hp more on the newer, but not sure.
