Hole for Throttle Body

I've got a BBK 56mm throttle body that I'm trying to put on my MAF 393. I got it used from ebay, and according to the auction it was run on a speed density motor. I remember in the auction the guy mentioned that there was the small hole drilled in one of the butterflies, and that if you were to run it with MAF, that you should solder up the hole.

My question is, am I suppose to have any holes in the butterflies on my TB for my MAF kit? Or should I just leave the 1 hole that is there, it's probably 1/8th" or so. I'm not sure if that guy is right or not. If the hole is plugged up, the only air getting by would be between the butterfly and the throttle body, and there isn't much of a gap, so I am thinking the hole should be there. Otherwise, very little air will be moving through when the butterflies are closed.

Justin, my BBK 56mm throttle body is 8 months old and it has no hole drilled in the butterfly of the throttle body. I'm running this t-body on my MAF equipped truck and have had no issues with it other than the 4 barrell sound when you open it up LOL. I would think the hole drilled into to it was to help with the idle on the speed density setup the guy you bought it from had. I would be a little leary about having a piece of solder being sucked into my bad boy engine. Try it out like it is and see if it idles high and go from there, I would think the IAC would correct for this but I could be wrong.

Have a good one ...Mike

You'd be surprised. Solder is very tough. I am a plumber and work with the stuff everyday. There are a few other options. If you talk to anyone that knows how to seal metal they might recommend welding. Can you remove the butterflies? If so I would weld then grind smooth. Just my oppinion. Solder is great and would probably work but a weld is better.

Solder, properly applied with plenty of flux might work, Silver solder would work better and brazing is an option. I'd probably take the butterfly out and touch it with a MIG or TIG torch while clamped flat and let it cool naturally, then smooth as moose94 advises.

Sounds like great advice guys but it might not be a bad idea to see how it runs before taking the welder to it

Yeah, but if that solder ever cam loose and went into the motor....

My throttle body/blade has a hole in it as well, and my truck didn't have any issues when I converted to mass air. I say try it first, I can't hurt anything.

I think I'm going to try it first, and see if I have a problem. I tried taking the butterfly off, but the screws are on there good and I didn't want to strip them.

Run it the way it is and then change it if it won't idle low enough. I'd get a small screw and put it in the hole. That way, if you ever needed to bump the idle speed, you could take the screw out. I'm not sure if you could weld that material or not, even if you wanted to, and 1/8" is a pretty big chunk of solder.

Hahaha...i don't think so man. An 1/8" is nothin. Mind you if it was 1/2" I'd be alittle worried but many people don't even count an 1/8". Is this the hole we are talking about? If its that small I wouldn't even worry about it. It may idle just fine.

I like the screw idea. We'll see what happens, I'll report back my findings.

On my SD system, I noticed that hole too. It's for the IAC valve.

^ I think Justin is talking about a hole in one of the throttle blades. MAF systems have an IAC too.

I know 1/8" chunk of solder isn't that big, but I wouldn't want it going into my engine.

I certainly don't want that down a brand new motor.
