vibration or shudder while towing

I haven't really found any info out there about the vibration or shuddering issue while towing, so thought I would throw this out there.
I just got an 05 Supercab fx4 4x4, with 5.4, 3.55 gears, and General p255/70/17 tires. Rides nice and smooth with no vibrations or shuddering, until I tow a 18 foot open trailer with a 2600 lb race car on it, then it gets a vibration. Don't matter what speed I am going, it is there, it just seems to get worse the faster the speed.
Just curious if anyone else out there has this problem only while towing. thanks

I'd be guessing one of two things. First one may be a tire. More load force throws it off where less load it isn't as noticable.

The other possibility is your driveshaft/pinion angle. When putting a load on the back, you're changing the pinion angle just enough to have it vibrate.

Just a layman's opinion from a computer guy.

I have the same thing. But I have a 04 Lariat SCrew with 3.73s. I took my 19' boat (1500 lb boat, 500 motor, 500 trailer) for a test tow last weekend just to see how the new truck tows compared to my old 97 lariat 4.6L.

Well, I had this weird shudder, sort of rythmic, faded in and out. Was very strange. My hitch seemed very loose in the receiver, I could wiggle it back and forth quite a bit. I just found out there is another hole in the receiver, which should position the hitch deeper into the receiver.

I hope to try that out and take it for a test tow this weekend.

The hitch is much tighter in the 97 Lariat's receiver.

Anyone know how much play (wiggle room?) there should be?

Maybe you have a similar issue?

I have an 04 HD SCAB. First time I towed a serious load I had this unbearable shake at 50-55 mph. I rented a U-Haul car flat bed for my wifes Jeep Liberty. The shake was there with the trailer empty or loaded. The total weight was about 5800 lbs. I had just installed BFG Mud Terrians on WELD wheels and did not have any problems prior or since about 1 year.

2 months ago I purchased an 05 Mustang GT from a dealer 200 miles away. Rather than drive it home I rented the same type trailer for the Mustang. I did not pull the trailer empty, but there was no shake like before. However it was a different trailer and I had installed the OEM rubber and wheels for the winter, MUD terrians dont like snow. I would guess that the tires are what caused the shake. Ford recognizes that there is a problem with the tires on the 04 as they extended the warranty, I would have the tires checked by the dealer.
