vibration or shudder while towing
I just got an 05 Supercab fx4 4x4, with 5.4, 3.55 gears, and General p255/70/17 tires. Rides nice and smooth with no vibrations or shuddering, until I tow a 18 foot open trailer with a 2600 lb race car on it, then it gets a vibration. Don't matter what speed I am going, it is there, it just seems to get worse the faster the speed.
Just curious if anyone else out there has this problem only while towing. thanks
The other possibility is your driveshaft/pinion angle. When putting a load on the back, you're changing the pinion angle just enough to have it vibrate.
Just a layman's opinion from a computer guy.
Well, I had this weird shudder, sort of rythmic, faded in and out. Was very strange. My hitch seemed very loose in the receiver, I could wiggle it back and forth quite a bit. I just found out there is another hole in the receiver, which should position the hitch deeper into the receiver.
I hope to try that out and take it for a test tow this weekend.
The hitch is much tighter in the 97 Lariat's receiver.
Anyone know how much play (wiggle room?) there should be?
Maybe you have a similar issue?
2 months ago I purchased an 05 Mustang GT from a dealer 200 miles away. Rather than drive it home I rented the same type trailer for the Mustang. I did not pull the trailer empty, but there was no shake like before. However it was a different trailer and I had installed the OEM rubber and wheels for the winter, MUD terrians dont like snow. I would guess that the tires are what caused the shake. Ford recognizes that there is a problem with the tires on the 04 as they extended the warranty, I would have the tires checked by the dealer.
