When going down a long steep grade, does it do any harm to put the truck in neutral and let the clutch out and coast? I drive in an area in which I can does this sometimes, and I was wondering if it would do any harm.
for long periods yes it can do harm cause your tranny gear on the out put shaft and bearing are turning still but not getting anyoil from the bottom. so if you still want to do that just push the clutch in or put it back in gears once in awhile.
but if it's in neutral, isn't the motor spinning the gears in the tranny?
sometimes if going down a steep hill and there isn't another hill or there is a stop sign/traffic lights at the bottom, i'll quickly take it out of gear and put it in neutral, and just roll down the hill. if there is another hill ahead, I'll shift up (say like from 3rd to 4th) and collect speed down the hill to burn off going up the next hill (where I usually shift back to third, halfway up the next hill).
