transmission problems

My 2002 F350 started last week not going into forward gears all the time. There has been no problems at all until last Monday, I shifted into Drive and nothing, no 2nd, and 1st seemed as if it was not fully engaged. Reverse was fine and I shifted back and forth a few times and it went into Drive and everything worked great for 300 or 400 miles. Then it happened again and again after a couple of times of shifting between Drive and Reverse, it went into Drive. The transmission would shift perfect and there was no slipping. But, the 3rd time it happened was 2 days ago and I cannot get it to go forward at all now , Reverse is fine with no slipping.

Any help or ideas, I would be thankful for.

Charlie

I haven't checked the codes. Not sure how to do it. But, there must be a transmission expert in the forum somewhere that could help with this problem.

Thanks,
Charlie

Charlie, I'm not an expert, but just went through a problem with the 4r100 transmission. I think just my Manual Lever Position Sensor was bad, but got charged for a full rebuild plus a new transmission cooler and then to top it off the transmission shop filled it with the wrong ATF (Mercon V instead of Mercon).

So, be careful! Good luck!

Is it 4wd? I wonder if part of the transfer case on the shifting fork if damaged. It slips one way and engages the other (reverse)? Just a thought.

You will have to start with some basic information. There are alot of people who can probably help you here. But your transmission is electronically controlled by the PCM. For them to help you correctly, and not have you out on a long (and expensive) fishing trip.......they are going to have to know what if any codes are being logged.
When I asked if there are any codes........the PCM will more than likely tell you where to start looking for the problem. The codes will have to be scanned at either a dealer or a well equipped mechanic. The scanner is plugged into the service diagnostic plug under the dash. You can also pick up a scanner for around $200 and you will be ahead of the game when the next problem pops up. Codes are important when diagnosing these trucks.
