Hey all, when I push in on the break pedal, just a little harder then it takes to completely stop the vehicle at a light, I hear a somewhat loud sound that resembles the sound of air leaking out of a balloon. I have heard this sound before on another Ford I owned, and I was wondering what the reason behind it is? Is it something normal, or a sign of something going wrong, or is it that something is already wrong? Any help would be appreciated.
the brake booster is located right behind the master cylinder ( where u put the fluid in ) it's a big round thing that uses engine vacuum to assist in braking .. the hissing sound is vaccum leaking past the diaphram (seal) inside the booster and the only fix is a new one ( not cheap ) 2 - 500 bucks ... just assuming by your reply to the other guy's post that you not totally mechanically inclined so ....i'd suggest taking it to a shop for diagnosis he should know right away . without this booster you have manual brakes ( okay for old datsun pick ups ) not okay for a full size ford truck - stay away from hills or driving with a load on - till you get that fixed ....
Yep, it's the brake booster or the vacuum line to it is bad. I just replaced my booster about 2 months ago with a good used one. I for one don't have $200-500 just laying around. It's not hard to replace even for someone who has never done it.
I've done it before on other vehicles too....never seems to take more than about 30 minutes. Just take your time and follow the manual....which I recommend a Haynes manual...available at most auto stores for anywhere from $12- 20.
Good luck!
