Hey all, I have a 1996 F150 4x4, and I am having a little problem with the breaks. After I put the truck in drive and press in the breaks so the truck remains at a full stop, I hear a sound that almost sounds like air leaking our of an air compressor. It is only when I push in on the break pedal... So does anyone know why it would be doing this, or what the problem is? I have heard a similar noise on a different ford I owned in the past, but it didnt seem as bad. Is this a sign of something going wrong, or has something already gone wrong, or is it just normal? Thanks for any help you can give!
not sure but would almost bet that it is your brake vacuum booster. it is the round black thing that your master cylinder mounts to. if it is making that noise it cant be good. if the vac. booster goes out you will not loose brakes, but sometimes the pedal will feel normal and sometimes it will feel like you are towing the truck as the booster is your power assist. i dont know how serious it is but i do know it isnt supposed to make that noise. someone will be along a little later to give you more ideas or info.

Some shhh sound is normal however a hiss is indicative of a ruptured diaphragm in the vacuum booster as bigdaddy said. Read this and see if it isn't familiar to your truck. http://www.mightyautoparts.com/pdf/articles/gb0802.pdf
I personally like to have my own components rebuilt. Less hassle with fit and other peoples problems. At least I know my own. I know an excellent factory authorized rebuilder if your interested. Boosters are also available from any parts house for about $70 and up.
