Hello,
I have a 78' F-250 and I need to replace the inner seals on the front differential. My problem is how do I get the housing and axle tube apart? Are they pressed together or what? Any help on this problem is much appreciated.
The whole axle has to come apart. Once you get the carrier out, they can be taken out. You might check your vent tube to make sure it isn't plugged up before tearing it all apart.
they make a spreader that will open up the case 6 thousandths to make it easy to pop the carrier out. You can also just pry it out without hurting anything.
beeboy said it,Housing Spreader.I've done it with 2 prybars, just working back/forth.The bad news is I've gotten a few out like that, but had a few that didn't want to go back in without the spreader. But a majority of the time there was no prob.
unfortunately, that spreader is like a $250 tool. But if you can, or know someone that does, weld, you could fab one up yourself for a few bux. There is a hole in each side of the housing that it fits into and pushes the housing apart just a little. Go too far and you ruin stuff.
