I am new to the board, and need a bit of advice. I have already done several searches of the site, and didn't quite find out what I need to know. I have an '82 F100 with 300 I-6 and 4sp OD transmission. The gear selector wiggles and twists all over the place (I believe there is a pin that is supposed to hold it in place) but I would really like to get an aftermarket shifter. I know Hurst stocks one in their catalog, but the application chart lists only trucks up through '79, and the way it reads, it implies that this is for a column to floor shift conversion using a car transmission. I assume (dangerous, I know) that my '82 transmission would be the same, but I was just wondering if anyone knows for sure. Or, would it just be better to find the mystery pin that keeps the selector in its proper place and be done with it. Thanks for the help.
I had one of those trannies in my truck, easiest way to fix it would be to take it apart and make the peice that is worn out youurself. But the best way to fix it is to get rid of it, espically if your truck is geared like mine, even with a truck 4 speed, I have to take off in granny low all the time. And, no your transmission will not accept the Hurst shifter, I would have gone that way with mine if I could have, but, mine also had a worn shift fork and wouldn't engage 3rd

Thanks for the advice, Evan. I went to the Ford parts department and looked up the parts--there are TWO pins, two bushings and two sleeves that pin the selector upper portion to the lower shaft portion. The sleeves and the bushings are no longer available, but the pins are $.82 apiece. Unfortunately, they only come in a pack of 10, and of course, I would have to pay for all 10. I figure for less than $8.20+tax I could find a suitable replacement in the parts box in the garage.
