steering gear

i installed a '76 f-350 steering gear and shaft along w/power steering pump into my '70 f-100. my '70 has had loose steering as long as i can remember. i was wondering if i adjusted the adjuster nut on the gear box a little if that would help out my loose steering. when i say loose steering i'm talking about how my '70 likes to stay inside the tire-wear tracks that u see on the freeways and highways. i do remember having this problem years ago b4 i installed the p/s pump and gear box. and when i got wider tires, (33x10.50 15LT) the problem went away. now i have p235/75R15's.

with faith in the FTE, i'm looking for some good advice in which direction i should go with this problem.

Check all of your ball joints and tie rods. With the bigger tires and power steering you have put more stress on the steering system. Also, you might want to have your power steering box looked at to make sure it isn't loose on the inside. Check all the bearingins/kingpins on your front axles too.

after inspecting the other suspension parts , yes you can adjust the box. dont tighten the box too much as you can damage the seals and wear the gears prematurely. when you adjust it you should have 1/2 to 3/4 inch of play in the steering.

Just did the disc swap from a 77,to my 67.The old drums were 4 bolts to attatch to the spindles .The 77 was directly attatched to the king pins for the disc swap you either take apart the king pins or swap the I beams. moparnut
