My dealer said the 97's would not trip the light with a leaky gas cap or hose. That started with a later model year but he didnot say which year.
That's good to know. That means it's most likely the fuel filler hose.
I just talked to a Ford dealer that I like to do business with near where I used to live. He's going to replace the plugs and timing belt in a few weeks. I also am going to let them at least diagnose the fuel smell problem, which is most likely the filler tube. If he gives me a good price, I'll let them replace it too.
It's a whole lot easier to let them do it than me. Besides, their shop rate is a whopping $39/hour. You gotta love rural dealers! Can you believe a real Ford dealer charging that kind of rate?! It's all dependent on the local economy.
