I give up... I wanted to know what the cetane number is in the fuel around town. I called a few stations and not one person had ever heard the term. I called some of the distribution points and some have heard of cetane but didn't know what the number is while others had no clue. I called THE primary distribution point (where all of my town's diesel comes from) in a neighboring city and they had no clue.
It would sure be nice to know prior to adding a cetane enhancer, huh?
Well Mike...I personally have not heard of any negative issues with to much cetane. It is my guess that it's positive effects plateaus at some level.
As I have mentioned before, here in the Dallas area (9 counties) the state mandates that distributors provide 48 cetane level diesel. I add 0.64+ oz / gal of Power Service (gray) at each and every fill up.
The math says I am running 54+ cetane level. I have read somewhere that our 6.0s were designed for a minimum 47 cetane...did not hear that from Ford though.
So...I wouldn't worry about having to high a cetane value.
BTW: My truck never blows smoke on start up. Even after it sits for a week and a half.
