My '87 f250 had dual tanks before I removed the leaky rear tank. It has started missing when I am gaining speed.Actually acts more like someone is periodically shutting off the fuel supply. I changed the fuel relay switch and it still doesn't run smooth. Because of the dual tanks, it has 2 relay switches, I put the new relay on the other switch and it heated up and my fuel pump(the one on the frame) kept running even when the motor was shut off. I switched them back.I am going to next change the fuel filter(hoping that is the problem). Question is:
Is there only 1 fuel filter, even though the truck was originally equipped w/dual tanks?
Hi,
I seem to be having the same problem you do with my 92 f-150 with the 351. I also have dual tanks.
Does your tach seem to bounce and shake?
My truck jerks or has power surges when under load or towing.
It would also have problems starting when it has been sitting for a few hours. The engine would crank as if there is no gas. Then, it would fire up like normal.
I replaced my fuel filter (I'm pretty sure there is only 1), and the truck ran good for a few hours. It recently got just as bad as it was before.
I have tried sea-foam and make sure I get fresh gas.
I also got an evap code when I got an eec test done.
Try going to your local autozone or advance auto parts to get a free test.
I'll post if I figure out the problem
Thanks,
Scott
Well, I figured out the problem. Actually, it was 3 problems at the same time. My egr control valve was shot. I had a bad plug wire (only 1 year old). My fuel pump is also shot. It sucks to diagnose multiple problems. If it runs like poo even when you idle, double-check the distributor cap, wires, and plugs. Don't cheap out on the wires.
