Over the past few weeks, I've notice my torque convertor sort of hesitating when it locks up. This is during acceleration, and I'm pretty sure it's the TC, because it always happens between the 3rd and OD shift, when the TC normally locks. It starts to lock, then releases for a few seconds while the truck is still accelerating, then goes ahead and locks up tight. It doesn't seem to do it when I'm accelerating hard. I don't think it's slipping at all. I don't have the TC mod installed. I'm currently running dino Mercon, but will be changing to synthetic very soon and also installing the the Sonnax valve/spring conversion. Since the TC lockup is controlled by the computer, I'm wondering whether this is an indication of a problem somewhere else, or is it with the TC itself. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Have you checked for codes? The reason I ask, ( and I may be wrong ) one of the PCM inputs it uses to determine shifts, TC lockup etc. is the speed sensor on the differential. Just a thought.
Yeah, I had problems with mine doing sorta the same thing when the speed sensor starting going bad. Tranny shifted real funny and the speedo was a little erratic. Cheap and easy to replace. Hope it helps.
My 99 F-350, 104,000 miles on it was doing the same thing and then it started hanging during the shifts and now its getting a new Kenny Burns rebuild in it. He said that when the T/C starts kicking in and out like that, it will start leaving aprts of it in the oil and they eventually make their way into the tranny and the valves start sticking which in turn starts the clutches glazing during the shifts. The rebuild comes with all new Sonnax valve body and performance kit, triple plate billet T/C and installation for $3200.00. Sounds like a lot until you start shopping around. I can't wait to get-er back tomorrow and see the difference.
