I am having a clicking sound come from my bell housing area, it only does this when i first start the truck and put it into drive or reverse. and then it only under 1500 or untill i get moving. it tends to make the noise less when the engine and trans are warm. My mechanic thinks that it is the flywheel dust cover tourque converter. Any help is appreciated.
Probably just hearing the Mechnical One Way Clutch on the Reverse drum clicking as you move slightly. Does it sound DEEp inside, or just on the otherside of the bell housing?
Thank you.....I have yet to post in the 63-66 forum, but will eventually. I restored a 65 F-100 when I was 15, 10yrs later she is just a pretty.....
ASTG Tranny guy I am not, or work in a tranny shop. BUT - I have worked on trannies for years, I know through experience, my freinds work are certified (but not NET people), I do all my own work. Trannies used to be scary - but after you crack a few open you get the hang of it - that and I research transmission stuff ALOT! I love them, and rebuild them on the side for cash. I try to stay PERFORMENCE oriented, because that is much more fun knowing the litle tips and tricks to make a tranny much better than the factory decided!
I will hang out here most of the time, so thank you for the welcome. I can probably answer most of your questions about C4/C6/AOD/E/4R70W/75W/E4OD/100's Chevy 350/400/700R/4L60E.
fianly pulled the trans yesterday, the torque converter was on its way out, the noise was comming forn the transmissinon having 130,000 on it w/o ever having the pan pulled. we think that the noise came from parts being out of tollerance on the shaft. im in the process of rebuilding it now, getting rid of the aluminum parts in it and putting in better seals, new springs, etc.
i saw the progress today, the rear main seal was torn up, the shaft was abele to move 1/4 of an inch, replaced it and am hoping that was what was causing it to be out of tollerance.
Well I hope your problems are over.but has anyone checked your exhust manifolds. When they just start to leak(which they're prone of) they just make a tiny tick.Especially when engine is cold.then it warms up and seals the leak.sometimes.
the ticking sound went away when it all warmed up, but it only happend when the truck was put into gear, the noise went away when i put it in park or nuetral,(rpm staying the same)
Ya but there is't enough exhust pressure at idle to leak past the manifold.Only under load. That was the case with my truck.I had to bring it to the dealer twice to get it fixed.Turned out to be a broken manifold stud.(not uncommon on these tritans engines) .Just thought I'd give you my 2 cents worth. It seems that the aluminum head expands at a diffrent rate than the cast manifold, the manifold starts to expand and breaks the studs off.Usually the front or rear studs either side. The fix is to use the new stud from ford with a smaller stud shoulder to let the manifold stretch without the stud holding it up.good luck.
