On my '03 you have to pull out on the head light switch. The '03 will run the fog lights with the parking lights, but I seem to remember reading that the earlier one's will only do it with the headlights, so the switch will only pull out when it's in the headlight position. They will also come on in automatic, but you must pull out on the switch. You can download an English owners manual in PDF format here http://www.genuineflmservice.com/default.asp?page=E4 .
On the dash, by the stereo if you move to the right (On the wood faux trim) you'll see the rear wiper control, then the rear defrost below that, then below that is the foglamp button....
The headlight **** cannot be pulled out, in neither of the 3 positions.
The **** under the rear wiper actuates only the rear fog lights.
The only possibility to get the front foglights burning is to use the 'flash to pass'.
Is there a software option to make them burn together with the rear foglights, or should I go the easy way and put in a separate switch with diodes to turn them on independently?
Rear foglights??? What the??? No such thing as rear facing foglamps. The button I mentioned works the front air dam foglamps. If you have your bright lights on, by default the foglamps turn off. There is a way to bypass this setup, I've done it and it works (there was a forum on here that gave in great detail the steps to take). Rear foglamps??? I'd like to see a picture of that setup. I'd take it back to the dealer/person you bought it from....
Rear fog lights sound like the Euro version, had a 2002 rental-X for a year plus while in Belgium and Germany...and the front fog lights are designed to work only with the "pass-to-flash"/intermittent hi-beam feature. This was apparently German department of transportation requirement. Wiring it with separate switch and diodes works well. Have done that to my '99 here in US, as Ford here cut's off fog lights when turn hi-beams on... Mike
Thanks guys, thats exactly my thought on it. I will put in a separate switch.
I will put picture's in the gallery when I get home tonight....
Another funny thing... I strongly suspect the explorers that are shipped through ford dealerships here in europe (like ours) are converted to european specs and trimlevel. Our explorer is a Limited, also on the vehicle papers.
But when I checked out the VIN, it says it's an XLT. So my guess is they convert them over here.... and the trimlevels are lower in Europe.
Very sharp looking ride.. I wish my 01 Limited had the rocker panel you have, instead of the running boards... I see what you mean on the rear lamps. Odd setup, is this type of light standard on cars/trucks across the 'big pond'?...
Every car over here has to have at least one rearfacing fog light. You have to use it when visibility drops below 50 meters (55 yards).
We are looking for some nice running boards, ebay is a good start, but think I will drop in at a car accessories shop on our holiday in the states in june.
It's not black actually, but in the shade and dark it looks black, in the sun it gets a purple shine to it, and in normal light it looks dark blue. I like the colors very much this way.
