Spare tire lock - help

I'm trying to drop my spare tire but no lock to be found. Previous owner must of lost it. I've searched this site for possible help and the only thing I see is pounding a 9/16" socket in. Has anybody had this problem with a better solution? I would rather not cut my cable. I'm wondering if a socket extension would fit. My lock has 6 points to it. I've read that there are many different designed locks out there. Any suggestions would be appreaciated.

On my Ford F-250, it had a pad lock with a plastic cover. First time I had to use the spare tire the lock was frozen shut. I ended up sticking the tire iron in the middle of it and busting it off.

Ski......you might try the stealership parts dept.. Take along your VIN....sometimes, not always.....they may be able to come up with a replacment key from the VIN. But also be prepared for a blank look, and a shrug. It's worth a try anyway.
I understand from reading other threads; that the price of the cable and lock assymbly isn't real bad. Hope this helps.

I just went through the same thing the dealership needs your truck because there are about 20 different keys they used over the years. They cant pull up wich one your truck has from the vin number. The new key was $24. The mechanic told me I could remove the whole lock assemebly and replace it with one that does not require a key for about $12. I went with the key I didnt feel like messing with it....just my experience, hope it helps
