Is there anything I need to know before I get gears for my truck? It is a 96 f150 Dana 44 8.8ls. Has 3.55 now and I want to go to 4.56. I know on some rear ends they are made differently for higher gears. So do i need to replace my trac lok with a different one? Would i need to replace the carrier on the front?
Thanks guys
Need to know a couple things. 1, what size tires? 2, what tranny? 3, what's your objective, off-roading abilities or street manners or some of both? With that info, we could tell you how things work.
In my case, I've got 31's with a 5-sp OD and 4.10, and there's plenty of power on the top end still. I could definitely make the jump to 33's, MAYBE 35's, but any more than that, and I'd want 4.56's, MAYBE 5.13's.
No Mo, I think what he's asking is if there's a carrier change on either the D44 or 8.8 axles between 3.55 and 4.56. Such as with a D60 or D70 you need a different carrier for 4.10 and down then from 4.56 and up. I don't know anything about those axles though.
8.8 has no carrier break
D44 front goes from 3.73 down and 3.92 up
4.56 would prolly do you good. if you plan to get bigger tires later on you might wanna consider 5.13's to and go ahead and get it out of the way! but sound slike you already know
I would recommend that you call Randy's Ring and Pinion. I don't buy from them because they're over priced but they typically have good advice for gearing. Again, I don't know dick about D44's but with a D60 front (reverse cut high pinion) you can use the 4.10 and down carrier and the gear sets you buy are thicker than norm. Meaning I'm using 5.13's on a 4.10 and down ARB carrier. This is how it's meant to be. I don't know if the D44 is like that but call and check. You may not need the new carrier after all.
by the way with 35in tires 4.10s puts u back to where u started with factory 30in tires 4.56 puts u above factory but still within the fuel econemy range so in my oppinion 4.56s would be best if u still plan on driving on the highway
