new engine knocking
I just rebuilt the 302 for my 86 f-150. I started it up and did not have any oil pressure. Its lucky if it was ran for 2 min. I found out the machene shop removed the oil gallery plugs in the front of the engine and did not tell me. When i primed the engine and started it up again it started knocking. It only knocks at idle. Just off idle it quits. im now running between 35-40 lbs at idle. It sounded like it was in the front but i borrowed a set of "mechanics ears" from the chebby garage where i work and it sounds loudest at the rear of the oil pan. any ideas? or do you think i will have to pull the engine back out.

Sounds to me like that motor needs to come out so you can see what kind of damage was done. Any amount of metal in the oil pan is bad news since it is probably what is left of a bearing.
It's a major bummer but if you contiue running it without knowing what is going on you could end up trashing the whole motor.

take it back to the shop and make them fix it. dont get the gear drive. they transmit harmonics all up thru the upper valvetrain and are not good. just stick with a dual roller timing chain. works great
