Spent a great deal of time under my new rig this weekend running wires and such. I was amazed at how much rust I saw under there. The axles, the drive shafts, hub assemblies, etc. I don't recall my V10 having that much, if any, and it was 2½ years old.
I have an 05 F350 PSD CC 4X4 and am experiencing the same thing. A fair bit of rust spots along the chasis and exhaust system. The chromy stuff along the bumper etc is also showing rust spots. Asked my service guy about it and he said it was "normal" and there was nothing that could be done. Next service that gets done I plan on getting all of this documented for future arguments. The truck has 6000 miles.
I do not understand the rust at all. Why in the heck can't they powder coat the frame, axles and drive shafts? You think they would on a truck that cost 45xxx.
Very good question. My 05 had 220 miles on it when I took it off the lot last week. Thing must've been sittin around the salt flats or something. My frame seems to be coated well with a about a 1/8" coating of tar (or something) but my rear axle has a paint coating but about 1/3rd of is it has flaked away exposing steel that is rusting. Everthing has no paint just a nice layer of red rust.
Do a search on this topic, it has been discussed before. The "tar" on the frame belongs there, they don't paint them anymore. As far as the rear end goes they all have a little surface rust on them. If you don't want to see any rust go buy a plastic car....anything made of metal will have rust.
there have been posts in the past about 03 and 04's. many people just pick up a can of undercoating or rustoleom/equiv. and paint all the bare surfaces. its 45k now, imagine if it were powder coated as you speak

My god! Did we have a bad day today?
I know the "tar" is supposed to be there- it was on my 02 also. But there are those of us that think, my friend, that if one pays a premium for a brand new vehicle, it ought to have a tad more protection of the undercarriage. I just thank my lucky stars that I live in an area where the only salt near my vehicle in the winter is that which drops from my french fries.
Yeah, my 04' has the same rust areas you have mentioned, thought it was kind of odd that a brand new truck would rust on it already since my last three gm trucks that were several years old did not have any rust that I could remember..
Yea my 05 has the same surface rust. I'm thinking of trading in the old bucket of rust on a 06 but it's only got 1800 miles, LOL. All the recent year SD I've seen have the same. I figure it will rust through in less than 75 years if I don't get on it soon. I have wood and metal working machines some of which are more than 100 years old with rust that's been around a pretty good while, course the CI is a pretty good quality. I guess that's why it doesn't worry me too much, still for 40K+ you would think the SD could have a little more rust protection.
Yeah, I'm not worried about it either. Just took me by surprise that's all.
I'm gonna rustoleum the axles, spring blocks, etc. I'm also having the dealership undercoat it too. One day I'd like to replace the diff covers with some nice chrome covers.
Suspensio parts and the like area rarely painted or coated. In most cases, they are cast iron, and while it may not be pretty....the rust would take forever to getbad enough to be an issue.
Look under any other car out there - same rust, same places. It's just that you don't get under your car all the time, but if you have a 4x4 Superduty, it's all "out there" everytime you walk up to it
This past winter on Long Island, there was a lot of salt because of rain/freezing causing black ice all over the place. My Rancho's rusted this winter - where last year they lived through just fine. The rest of the truck is looking a good bit rustier than last year. I think someone started spreading sodium chloride (regular salt) instead of calcium or potassium chloride ... but that's just a theory. Truck was manufactured in 10/00, is model year '01, and bought 06/02 with 25 miles.
My brother bought by '74 highboy new, and an '86 F250 new... both times he got right under it and painted or undercoated everything. It's another of those "known things" about Ford pickups - like the effectiveness of the Traction-Lok

That was my first thought, that it was just much more visable. More visable due to the SD sitting higher and due to the fact that it is new rust, not cured for lack of better terminology. However, I just poked around under my 1977 F150 and my 2001 4Runner. Ain't no rust like under my 05 F350.
