This is for a co-worker's truck. 2000 F250 V8. Blown out spark plug third back from on passenger side. Cannot get threads to bite into the head, however, a "chaser" (like tap) fit in there just fine. What to do???? If this is a tough fix, anyone up to the task in the hi-desert?
Mine blew out about two months ago on my v10. (around 80k miles) A Helicoil did the job. Two thousand miles later and no problems. It was second from the firewall on passenger side. The mechanic from work fixed it witout having to remove the fuel rail. All the other plugs were also replaced for their first time. No other ones seemed to be coming loose. NAPA has the Helicoil and tap. My company has a fleet of Triton v-10's. We already have done 4 with Helicoils.
from what i've read here,it's both.you just gotta love it.there have been several posts inhe, and from what i can tell it seems you have to take a check with a torque wrench every so often to make sure they are around 12 foot pounds,i believe.
Ford may not recommend a Helicoil but they will not replace the head if it is not under warrrenty. Also they will replace it with a head that has the same amout of threads which in my opinion is not enough. A BigSert insert is pretty much a Helicoil only the kit will cost you quite a bit more. Also if a Helicoil would ever fail you could go the BigSert method. I think in the 2002 models they changed the head design. I could be wrong but I have not heard of any spark plug blowouts in the newer years.
God I hope they fixed that Ive got a 03 5.4 and had a 92 and 97 4.6's and had no trouble with this, the 92 was a crown vic and I changed those I bet three times.
I have 2002 mine blew out three months ago original plugs with 32,000 miles dealer fixed for free under warranty. Even gave me a loner for the week. Ramp ford in port jeff n.y. is one of the best dealers i know.
According to this website, it's 90 - 03 4.6, 5.4 and 6.8L engines. I recently bought an 03 F350 with a 5.4L. Are there any preventative measures beyond the occasional retorque to 12 foot pounds mentioned by 1ruralmailman?

Thanks.
From what I've read (and done) there seams to be a few basic rules.
Don't leave the plugs in for 100k like Ford suggests.
Retorque them every 25k or so.
R&R plugs on a cold engine.
Use anti-seize on the threads.
Torque to spec, no "guesstimating" here.
But when you think about the millions of modular motors running around with near zero maintenance it is still a very small number.
my 02 just lost a plug yesterday just wondering how hard it is to do the heli coil myself?I have never used a heli coil but I am very mechanically inclined.
