problem starting when hot
I honestly think that if people would start with the simple things first like checking your grounds and what not then people wouldnt panic. Use your common sense, and think it through before panicing. Tex and Quicklook are exactly right about this. I will almost bet anything it is a bad ground, again, something simple. Just be patient everyone and things will work out trust me, been doin this stuff since I was about 12 years old.

Same problem on mine.
I haven't been stuck though, since I replaced the starter last summer. I got an additional small improvement when I replaced the fan clutch.
Now that the weather is 100+ degrees, it is starting hard when hot again, especially when I use the AC. The transmission, once again in the hot weather is also shifting hard when it heats up.
I have been assuming that I have a heat problem, and I've been planning on installing a couple small pusher fans in front of the AC condenser (it completely covers the radiator)
I guess I should also check the timing, and the trans problem may not be related to the starter problem.
kinnja,
Install a transmission cooler, the biggest you can find. It is well worth it. If you put pusher fans in front of the condenser I'm afraid that you will develop turbulent flow with diminished velocity and cause more of a heating problem. You're in the temperate zone (hot in the summer). I have installed a 160° thermostat in my 460 and have had absolutely no problems since. The 160° stat opens at 160°'s, but due to ambient temperature the truck operates around 190° to 195° on a mechanical gauge. This should be ideal. I did not bypass the cooler in the radiator when I installed the cooler. On reflection, it might be a good idea to avoid the 190° bath for the trans fluid. My E4OD operates as advertised and I tow a fairly heavy gooseneck horse trailer and utility trailer. When you check timing, remove the spout for accuracy.

I'll bump this back up instead of starting a new thread.
My truck is a '90 351w E4OD.
Starts right up when cold and when you shut it down when hot and crank it again it'll start right back up. But when its hot and I shut it down for 5-10 mins it has a harder time starting. Yesterday it didn't even start for me
The first time since I've bought it, it didn't start for me. It would just crank and crank and crank... I'll double check all the grounds but I was hoping somebody else would have some suggestions. Coil going bad maybe?
