Single tank? If not, does it do it on both tanks? If the behavior is the same, it's probably on the dash side. If you do have one tank, then it gets harder. It could be the sender in the tank.
Does it read empty or full even when not full. If it reads full and it's not it's the sending unit i have an 87 with duel tanks i've already replaced one sending unit in the front tank and i have to replace the back one. at auto stores like parts america or autozone they run about $100.
mine floated around...a lot. could check the electric grounds, or its the sending unit. mine was a bad sending unit. also dont go to autozone or advanced auto for one of these. the fuel pump and sending unit are built togther, but when i bought one from autozone the gauge was good and the pump was dead, so i took it back and went to advanced, and their pump was good and sending unit was dead, so i went to napa and they both worked.
100.00 for the parts. labor is what kills. i had to pull the bed off, because the straps that held the tank are rusted. when you get the bed off it's easy cause it's right on top of the tank and you have room to work.
If it is near empty or empty it is way easier to handle otherwise you'll need a floor jack and another person to help with lowering the tank down to get to the sending unit and don't forget to ask about the tool if there is one to remover the ring that holds the unit in the tank if not be careful on removing it with a flat screw driver and a hammer once you have it down take a wire brush or wire wheel on a drill and clean as much dirt and any rust build up and spray the ring to hopefully loosen the ring with penitrating spray like WD40 and you will be able to see which direction you have to turn the ring to remove it there is tabs that stick up that keep it from turning to much and becoming loose again.
Need to know if anyone here had problems when you flip the switch, on the front tank it's not reading even though the tank is full. I'm guessing that I'm having a electrical issue here on one of the tanks. Again, no problem having a reading on the back tank when I change but not reading the front tank
The sending unit is $35 from Ford, not sure where you got $100 from. Anyway, there are two reasons why you want the tank as empty as possible - if you do drop it, and it splits, you won't leak that much gas all over the place. Second, gasoline weighs about 5lbs per gallon. So 20 gallons, is 100lbs. That's a lot of weight to lower with you lying next to it underneath a rusty truck with debris falling into your face.
Having just dropped both my tanks to clean up my crewcab's frame, them being empty made the job very easy. Actually, only one was empty. I used the fuel pumps to transfer the gas back and forth between the tank I wanted to drop, and the one that was staying there temporarily. A battery, a few alligator clips, and a section of fuel hose and two clamps. Worked like a charm.
I actually had to do this, because both tanks were almost full when I started this project, and I ran out of lawn equipment to fill up.
