Just got through doing 600+ mile trip to Lexington, KY and back. Carrying two adult size kids, wife, myself and a ton of baggage, averaged 18.3 going down into a stiff headwind and over 19.3 coming back with a slight tailwind. Pretty respectable for a 6000# vehicle with the 5.4L two valve/cylinder V8.
I would say that's about right. My '03 Eddie Bauer 5.4 4x2 gets around 18.5-19 on average, driving about 50 miles/day on the highway with just me. I hardly ever carry anyone else in my Expedition; I'm very picky about it, ie. don't slam the doors, bump your feet, etc. So I would say that with all the people and luggage, your are doing very well. I'm very pleased with my mileage and haven't once entertained the thought of trading for something smaller like some people have.
