OK this is a Lake Day thread. Kind of maybe high jacked another thread so I decide all by myself to make a Lake Day thread. I want some ideas on a location then I'll try to make a poll so we can vote. I'm new to FTE so I don't know where the usuall places are. Someone please let me know what worked well in the past and new idea are welcome also. Close to me is Watson Park. they have places we can reserve. Boat and pony rides for the kids. Mini golf and a playground. Have to check on horse shoes. And I think a walking trail. Used to have fishing but I'll have to check on that also.
Course there is Tuttle. But some need to get there wheels ready to roll for that. "Mule" is alway ready. But "Jr." may need the calender to say 2006 or 8 before it takes a stroll through the "Rock Garden". But that is what I bought it for. "Mule" will go most everywhere else.
Good thread Jack we need to start looking at a lake day. Before we have had it at Melvern lake northeast of Emporia. Tuttle sounds like fun cause we can do a little off-road fun too. Anyway lets get some input and ideas then see where it goes.
Lots of campground/park options at Tuttle. Some now require a day pass if you don't have a park permit. Others are free. River Pond below the dam has several covered shelters that could be reserved with parking. They are free. That would still be about a 15mi drive to the ORV area. Jack you are more familiar with the Fancy Creek area. If I can help on this end I would if Tuttle is an option for a Lake Day.
Fancy Creek is a fee area and does not have water anytime. On the east side of the bridge is Randolf park area. It has water in warm weather and showers. It is a fee area also. Randolf has a nice city park. The problem with the north end is that the lake has been pretty low for a couple of years making access to the lake difficult. The north end is great if you are going to wheel the OHV area. Not very good if you want to use the lake to boat or swim.
whereever you guys decide is fine with me, I just have one requirement. That i can get the boat relatively close to where the group is. I really don't want to park it out of site from where we are all hanging around.
Ok, I added a poll with some locations. Husker it would be great if you could get info on the south end of Tuttle as if we do go to Tuttle that would be the best place. They even have an OHV area down there. No full size 4x4's are permited though. We have to go north for that. But motorcycles and ATV's are what the south OHV area is for. This is the link I have for Tuttle: http://www.kdwp.state.ks.us/news/sta...s/tuttle_creek
I check the box to let you vote for more than one place. So if you like 2 or 3 spots all the same vote for as many as you want.
I've been wanting to take the 600 down to the ORV area for awhile now. If I wait much longer, I'll have a new 650 to take down. Manhattan works unless work says no.
The only lakes close to Wichita available for boating are...
Afton, but they have a speed limit
Cheney, but its more like a giant mud pit
ElDorado, not a bad lake, but stay out of the old lake area...too shallow!
Melvern lake would be the best spot for Everyone. Thats where its always been. This is for a GTG and i think we need to think about the wifes and kids. 4 Wheeling would be out for me, so Tuttle is out for me! Watson park is too far for me to drive with a 16 month old child!! so my choice is Melvern lake!!
Maybe we can split this up a little. If we go to Tuttle it could be a 2 day event, the ones that wan tot 4-wheel and motorcycle ride can meet up on Saturday and have some fun. Then Sunday the boaters and lake party could be on an area more accessible for the boat. The ones that wanted to could just camp Saturday night. Remember you don't have to have a 4wd to have fun in the ORV area. You can ride with others, drive other vehicles etc. it is all fun and most would rather have a spotter in the truck with them. Just a thought.
Watson just rents you paddle boats. We could meet up at the south end of Tuttle or Melvern(got it right this time) for boating on Saturday(or Friday evening) then go up and camp or stay near the north Tuttle ORV Saturday night. Then wheel on Sunday.
