92 f-150 5.8 - Bought the truck last year with a bad transmission, had the tranny rebuilt. It does good, but builds high rpms until about 20mph then passenger gear kicks in and out until I step on it then levels out, then at 55 or 60mph there is no kicking it in to pick up a notch and go around someone. Is there something I am missing or something not adjusted right? I'm not worried about the 20mph to much would like to have a passenger gear to kick in though. Its been totally aggravating. The 5.8 doesn't seem to have the performance I thought it would, but Then again 2 cats, cheez wiz.
Thanks for any input
If I remember correctly, if you have the electronic (E4OD) trans, there's something called a "shift position sensor" or something like that. You can tell of you have this tranny by the presence of a button to turn off OD, either on the dash or the end of the shifter. The position sensor is very touchy and has to be precisely adjusted, or it won't kick down very willingly. Might have to take it to a dealer, they'll probably know more about it than most independents.
Good luck.
My understanding of it (the position sensor) is that it might be telling the computer that you're in 3rd and not OD. I'm not too familiar with it; when I had my trans rebuild, the shop had to have a Ford tech come by and adjust it. Oh yeah, the sensor is on the trans, on the driver's side. You can follow the linkage from alongside the engine to the trans. to figure out where it is. If it is adjusted right, it may have just gone bad, as it doesn't look too well protected to me. This sensor tells the computer to tell the trans which gear to be in, as there is no actual shifter or lever, etc. that goes into the trans.
Sorry I can't be a little more specific. My method of having trans work done is to write a check... Maybe someone else on this board knows a little more about it that I do? (anyone?)

The adbvise about the positoning sensor on the transmission is right on the money. The sensor is either out or ists not adjusted right. It is telling your transmission that its in 3rd gear. It therefore will not down shift at that speed. The best thing to do for this is to take it to a dealer or someone specializing in Ford Transmissions. The have to hook it up to the anylizer and adjust it that way. Good luck.
