Whenever I'm trying to push the engine faster than it wants to go, I get these little popping type noises, kinda hard to describe what they sound like exactly. Kinda like muffled popcorn popping.
My friend said it was something about little backfires or undetonated fuel or something, ah actually I can't recall exactly how he described it.
Could it be a spark problem? I don't really know what condition the plugs are in, but it does burn oil.
Whoops, forgot to mention that. It's an 88 ranger with a 2.9. I've never really kept accurate track of how fast it burns oil, but a somewhat-wild guess would be a quart a month or so? (probably less, actually)

Doesn't a rev limiter simply limit the RPMs? This has nothing to do with the engine speed -- it can happen at 1500 RPM or 3000 RPM. It just happens when I am pressing the gas hard.

.
That why I said rev limiter, and your right on RPM.
I did explain it kind of weirdly, my bad. Basically at any given rpm, I can press the gas pedal more and more and it goes faster and faster. But at a certain point, giving more gas just starts making the popping/knocking noises. It actually is easier to do at lower rpms because the engine doesn't have as much torque. Or something like that.
I haven't owned it that long, so I don't know how it acted in the past. It's behaved pretty much the same since I've owned it. It's no speed demon, but it drives decently. It's the worst at highway speeds -- hard to stay above 60 or so sometimes.
Nope, not sure. Guy I bought it from said that the guy before him rebuilt the engine and didn't get the reassembly quite perfect, and thus it burns a little oil. Exhaust is pretty normal looking.
Some 2.9s have adjustable rocker arms (some don't). If yours does, he may have pre-loaded the lifters too much. (I hate it when people who don't have a clue try to rebuild an engine)...did he give you this little bit of info before or after you gave him the bucks for the truck? -TD
