I just bought an 02 screw 5.4 And was wondering what everybody has done to increase the gas mileage and power and how much it increased. I will be pulling my drag car to the track once in awhile with it so I would like a little more power to help with that but I would prefer to keep running 89 octane gas.
Absolute easiest power and fuel mileage comes for a computer tuner like superchips. Easy and relatively inexpensive (for the gains). Don't believe all the hype though... you'll gain HP, but the mileage won't be much... face it... Our Supercrews are big, heavy trucks.
Once you reprogram for more power, you'd need the premium fuel, correct?
I would think it's either mileage, or power.
I was soooo happy when I filled up the other day. Almost broke 14mpg!
Thinking about getting an intake to help out. I can justify it by convincing myself it will give me some mileage
Tonneau cover got me from 13.5 to 14.0... there's a wopper. Others promised me at least 2 mpg's.
As for premium. I've heard more wives tails about running premium than I care to count. Mostly from people who don't know the difference, or don't understand an octane rating to begin with. Your engine can run safely and with just as much "go" with the lowest octane rating that does not cause pinging. Generally a tuner will not affect your fuel needs.
I think I am going to look into getting an air intake and exhaust for nowand maybe later get a tuner but I have talked to a guy who sells them and he said they are not really worth the money because they dont help that much.
