gaskets and layoffs

All,

I survived yet another layoff. I was actually hoping to get layed-off this time. But, I guess I've still got a job for a little longer. The bad side, I think one of my good buddies is getting canned, and I have to go back to night shift. On a good note, the night comes with a 13% kick in the salary, not chump change at my pay level. So, I'll have a little more play money. Hopefully that will get the project up and running sooner (not that money was really slowing me down, I'm just being lazy).

I did get around to wrenching some this past weekend. I got the oil pan and the intake manifold installed, and felt really good about the job I did sealing them. I was thinking, this baby isn't gonna leak this time. Then, I noticed that one of the intake bolts was blocked by a gasket. Apparently, you can get an intake gasket installed flipped front to back. All the ports will line up, but the middle bolt hole will not :-( ahhrrggg! I first made a hole and got the bolt installed without removig the intake. But I was worried that there might have been a blocked port or poor heat transfer between the heads and the intake, so I pulled it back off.....And, I was right, it was very nicely sealed on there...crap!

Oh well. I'll get some more gaskets on the way and get this thing running soon.

LOL!! I find that I do that more often then not, unfortunately. Luckily I find out before I got it glued down too good. I'll just glue them down to head, not paying attention to heat riser hole and.....yup, they don't work well that way.

This past time I was just a bit smarter.....I layed them on the intake and made sure I had them the proper direction. When you only do it once every couple years....it's the little details that catch you every time.

Gaskets are on the way. Maybe I'll get them straight this time.

Making a one day transition from Day to Night shift is not much fun....

Man, tell me about it. They just let go of 5 out of our 60 or so department. Sad to see them go, they were good guys. Damn IT industry is pretty iffy these days. Though, in my case I want to keep my job

I don't have a problem with keeping my job so much. It pays great, low hours and awesome benefits. But the wifey is thinking about relocating to Big D. If we wanted to do that, it would be much easier if I recieved one of the layoff packages. It would be about 4 months pay for me. That sure helps make moving easy. But mostly, I just wish my buddy didn't get canned. He's got 2 kids. Me, I got a wife that makes more than I do and no kids. I think we could handle a layoff....

Oh well. now I'm shopping for ways to squander my shift differential...$1000/month makes a heck of a car payment.

If it's that bad, and you guys have a common supervisor, why not trade? I've seen guys do that before.
And yes, it is wicked easy to swap those gaskets around.
A guy I went to college with built an LT1 vette engine for his camaro, and put the head gaskets in backwards. He actually did this twice, and couldn't figure out why it kept overheating and blowing head gaskets. Some rich kid that didn't really care about going to school, only that his parents payed for everything.
