SENDING UNITS OR GAUGES???

I have dual tanks on an 84 extended cab. My fuel gauge acts weird on both tanks. When I fill up, the gauges work fine. After I get down to 3/4 tank, the needle crashes all the way to the bottom. Seems to me that since this problem is on both tanks its not a sending unit. Is there any way to test the gauge itself? Thanks in advance.

SENDING UNITS OR GAUGES???

I had the same problem with the rear tank on my 82 F-250. It was the sending unit in my case. It consists of a tightly woven spring looking deal which is called a reostat. I can't remember which section was which, but when the float would reach the part on the reostat that was all frayed the fuel gauge would drop to nothing. Replaced the sending unit and its never had a bad day since .

check also the switching valve that changes from tank to tank... there also may lie the problem. I have the same sort of thing except both tanks read high.
good luck
