I want to sell my 94 f150 4x4 for a smaller 4x4 ranger, the trails out here are to tight for a fullsize. My question is what rangers came with stock drivetrtains that can handle trail abuse. What t-caser, tranny and diffs should I look for? Also waht motors should I consider?
thanks
Any year with the TTB front end{85- 97}.In the gen 1-some early gen 2s Look for one with a 2.9 V6,after that a 4.0.ALL models,5 speed manual tranny.manual t-case and manual hubs. The late gen 2s and up with the 4.0 have the D35 front axle and 8.8 rear ends. There stronger then then Gen 1-2 with the D28 FE,7.5 rears.
Of coures look for a standard cab short bed{easier to turn around}You might went to look at BIIs if you want a rig that can turn an a dime.
{NOTE}I'm not bashing SLA front ends ,I just think TTB are better front ends for a Trail Rig.
If you're looking newer, get an 01 or newer. The front axles are always engaged (live axle) so you don't have any hubs to break or mess with. When the front end changed to SLA torsion bar setup in 98, they had Pulse Vacuum Hubs. They suck, and there are no manual replacements from anyone yet. In other words, stay away from 98-00 if it is on the trails quite a bit. 99% of the 98+ Rangers have an electronic transfer case. It mostly reliable, same basic design (I think) as the other year of Rangers. Just have to clean the motor every now and then (easy). Go for a 4.0L only, the 3.0L is kind of week. The 4.0L will also have an 8.8 rear end, plenty strong.
If you go 97 and older with the TTB suspension, lift kits are much cheaper, and the front end flexes better. Look for manual hubs and Tcase, much easier to find on the older ones. And yeah, stay away from the auto tranny.
