Hey everyone, I'm looking for help fixing my fathers "new to him" Taurus. Its a 94 3.0L vulcan. The problem is that above 60 mph the speedo goes insane moving back and forth across the whole range. While the problem doesn't phase him while driving the car was going to be mostly for my sisters to drive back and forth to college everyday and they are paranoid about speeding as a result they hate driving that car. Anyways I want to fix it for them, but I'm tring to figure out where to start trouble shooting the problem from the dashboard or the sensor. Any advice?
If the instrument cluster doesn't have a digital speedo, then it's run by cable. My guess is that it's the cable binding up, or possible a problem with the connection of the cable to the speedo, that is causing the problems. Sometimes you can get away with just lubing up the cable with some graphite or something similar.
To check it, you're gonna have to get at the back of the cluster where the speedo connects to it, which requires removing the key switch, dash finish panel, and a few other steering wheel cover panels and screws. Not that hard of a job if you do it right.
Fortunately for you, several of the necessary steps are set forth nicely (w/pics) in the following PDF file, starting at item #14 (page 10):
