What hp?
I have a 92 ranger xlt with a 4 liter v6 5sp standard. What kind of horse power does this have? (Stock)
What can I beef it up to? I have found headers and a few things for this motor. I have a 9"rearend from a merc that I can resize. Is it worth it?
I would like to go to an auto trans, can it handle it? (A4ld)
Or I just might put a 460 in it! I have a spare motor and c6 trans.
I am willing to do some fab work to fit it in. Good idea on not? Let me know! As I have not made up my mind yet if I am even going to keep the truck or not.
Steve
That eventually got up to 160/225 at the end of the 4.OHV 's run.
I am sure you can beef it up quite a bit, but that's if you are in the mood for what basically is an all-aftermarket engine, minus the block. The headers, cams are out there, supercharger, pistons should be out there.....
The 9" is a waste, though. The 8.8 can handle most anything a v6 can toss at it, even a 7.5 rear can handle much of that same abuse. The 9" doesn't have an ABS sensor cut-out, so you'd be out of luck anyway, unless you could carb a 4.0 for cheap (I know you can't, so that's tongue-in-cheek).
The a4ld has been around, so a good performance tranny shop ought to build it up for you, IF you need go that far.
460 = lots of work and the c6 needs a LOAD of "masssaging" to get it under anything less than a full-sized tranny tunnel.
I'm not sure how many internal mods there are aside form replacement cams, porting, roller lifters, and rocker rollers. For essential mods though, it always comes back to the basics; More air in and more air out. The entire intake can be redone starting with a throttle body spacer, larger bore throttle body, larger intake tube/FIPK, larger MAF, and better-breathing air filter. All of that is wasted if the air can't get out though. Add a set of headers and a cat-back mandrel-bent exhaust (Gibson, Borla, JBA, etc.).
There are superchargers out there if you look hard enough, too. As for the rear, I agree that keeping the 8.8 is your best bet. The've been putting that rear in Mustangs, Rangers, Explorers, and F150s for over 20 years. Unless you're planning on over 400 HP, I think you'll be fine with the 8.8
