TTB/Dana 44 front end
I am exchanging the rear 9" with 3:50's, with a Dana 70 and 4:10's. The rear swap will be simple, with just a few minor changes. However, the front is another story. I am swapping in a straight axle, leaf-sprung, Dana 44 out of a '76 3/4 ton. The 44 has drum brakes, but a little machine work, and a set of open-knuckles will house a pair of disks.
My question is that since the front is going to take a bit of work to get in, and I need the truck within 2 weeks, is it possible to put the outter knuckle from an 8-lug 44 on the TTB knuckle currently under my truck? I have seen this done on a 79, but both were straight axles. I am not going to use 4wd until I get the straight axle under, but I am trying to get the gearing from the Dana70, but not wanting to carry 2 spares.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks
Anyone interested in this--The knuckles from a Dana 44 straight axle WILL NOT fit on the TTB Dana 44. The knuckles are about 2" too short. The 3/4 ton spindle will fit on the 1/2 ton knuckle, but the rotors will not work. It took about 4 hours, but I figured it out by trial and error.
