Stock Exhaust

I removed my stock muffler and installed a straight pipe, my performance was significantly reduced and my fuel milage went down about 2 mpg. I reinstalled my stock muffler.

IMO these engines have so many sensors for parameter control; they do need some back pressure. These are not the motors of yesteryear…I think you just found that out.

.. In the old days you could straight pipe engines and get a way with it, now days….tuff to do. I know everyone wants to believe, if you do pipe it….
…. must be better.
This is IMHO

I replaced my stock muffler with a flow pro high flow muffler, 4" tailpipe, and a 5"tip. Not much difference in price, and sound. My mpgs have dropped from 15.5 city to 12.5-13, and from 17-19 Hwy to 14. Could the muffler be causing this decrease. The truck is in the shop with the surging/dieing thing. I had a recorder and they are seeing what it says. Anyway I was thinking of taking the muffler off with 4" pipe from the cat back. Are there mufflers that do not affect MPGs as much as what I have if that is the issue, or could it be winter fuel (hear in CO), or could it be related to the surging issue. I went the cheap route with the current exhaust (no money left after my wedding), but I really miss the higher MPG's if that what is causing it. Any ideas how to increas the MPG's, thanks Levi

I have heard, and Tim can probably clairify it if I am wrong, that these engines need back pressure for the turbo to operate properly, I have seen many posts to this matter that if you go to a bigger muffler and exhaust pipe you could get the surging due to loss of back pressure. I didn't know just removing the stock muffler would cause a loss in mpg till I tried it. I did not have a surging problem but I also did not got to a 4" exhaust.

I do recall a trip after the muffler was put on with normal MPG's, it seemed to get worse as of late. Levi

I am kind of in the same boat. I put a 4" cat back on w/ an AeroTurbine muffler. I had read here that the 4" would add 1-2 mpg and the AeroTurbine claimed to add 3-4 mpg. I thought between the two I would come out at least a couple ahead if not more.

Mileage jumped up to 16.7 around town immediately after. Now, however after several tankfulls, the mileage seems to be diminishing to about 18 hwy, 14 city when before at stock it was 21 hwy, 15 city.

Kind of confusing. Also, I thought if you went w/ the cat back, you would maintain enough back pressure for the turbine...kind of best of both worlds.

Anyway, I kept my stock stuff, now wondering if its worth the headache, and wasted money, to just put the stock pipe and muffler back on.

I was thinking of trying an aerou turbine muffler too, but now I wish I has saved my old muffler. How much will a new one set me back, along with tail pipe. Levi

I have installed on my truck the MBRP exhaust system. Over all I like the system and I have gained about 1-2 mpg all the way around. I do most of my driving in the city so I see about 15-16 mpg consistantly. Prior to the install it was 13-14, not to bad I guess. These engines do need a certain amount of back pressure to run well. I also use Power Service in the grey bottle at every fill up. Its cheap and works well. I dont however run a programmer. I do have my entire stock cat back system. If anyone is interested you can email me.

Boy, I really hate hearing this, as I am scheduled to have a Flo-Pro turbo back system installed tomorrow morning. Their down pipe is 3.5" for half way down, opening to 4" for the rest of the system, 5" tip. I will keep the Cat, but the inlet/outlet of it will be cut to 4". I have accurate EGT/BOOST/MPG readings both towing and solo to compare with the new exhaust. Maybe I will ask the shop to try and keep the old downpipe in servicable condition in case I need to put it back. They installed this same system on other trucks, and haven't had any dissatisfied customers yet. Wish my truck luck

My flo pro is just the muffler, tail pipe, and tip. I was going to go cat back this summer. Does the muffler really control that much back pressure. That is why I didn't touch the cat. It seems like some are having no troubles and some are with or without an exhaust system. What system will give good sound, and not affect back pressure. I am stock with no plans of adding a tuner. Plenty of power as is. Thanks Levi

I have a complete 4" Magna-flow exhaust from the turbo back and have had no power loss or mpg loss or gain. In my opinion most people loose mpg because you get on it more to hear the pipe.

Also the is no back pressure sensor after the turbo so it does not know what exhaust is on it. The turbo itself provides all that is needed.

I installed a Gibson Extreme duals (I just like pipes out both sides) and milage stayed about the same about .5 up intown and 2 on the road, 01-21-04 build,10K miles. The muffler was "straight through" and I sure does not hold back much. Sound is good doesn't offend the wife. Good Luck
