Putting new rotors/pads on my 00 SD 4x4 this weekend. Anything I ought to do or check on the front end while the calipers and rotors are off anyway? Rear end ?? Truck has 53K on it. Truck does lots of towing & 4X4 usage is pretty regular.
Any serviceable stuff in the manual locking hubs ? Bearings? Anything I should grease/lube or replace while I'm in there?
Was planning on checking - Front Ball joints & steering linkage for play & wear at a minimum. I got the whole weekend to get it done. But if I have to get parts from the stealer they are only open till noon on Sat. If I can I'd like to do some preventative stuff while I've got the time.
Well got it apart this AM. Bad news... Looks like I'll be buying U/L balljoints. Pass side has quite a bit of play. Drivers side doesn't but I'll probably do both anyway. Planning on getting the greaseable Moog ones from a local NAPA store. Luckily there are quite a few SD's around here so they had them in stock.
Back to the original question --- Now that I really do have to take everything apart on the front end ... Can I expect to have to replace more than just the ball joints ? What else should be serviced ?
With a lot of 4x4 work make shure you check the axle U/Js and replace if worn while you are in there. I set out to replace the U/Js and then found the lower ball joints were worn on `87 F250 4x4. Also grease wheel bearings while you are at it and check brake rotors and pads. Best of luck.
